The last year or two has seen hiking and cycling become incredibly popular ways to explore Singapore, but let’s face it, sometimes it is just way too hot! So why not explore our sunny island in the air conditioned comfort of a bus instead?

Here are five scenic bus routes to try, depending on your mood:

For the anime fans

Yishun Dam

Calling fans of Spirited Away! Remember the scene where Chihiro rides with No Face on the train? You can do almost the same on bus 117, which travels through Yishun Dam as it brings you from Punggol to Sembawang.

Hop on the top deck to revel in the soothing sights of water—best enjoyed during the golden hour. And if you’re taking this scenic bus route earlier in the day, stop by Seletar Aerospace Park to stretch your legs, soak in the sights of the aircraft, and grab a bite at one of the cafes and restaurants.

For the thrill seekers

South Buona Vista road

You might have heard drivers rave about “99 bends”, the winding downhill road leading the way from the National University of Singapore to West Coast Highway. Also known as the less exciting sounding South Buona Vista Road, this route is covered by Bus 200 and offers a journey of twists and turns amidst scenery reminiscent of the rainforest.

Contrary to what one might think, though, there are actually only 11 bends, not 99, and it isn’t legal to go faster than 40km/h—but it's enough to give you the feel of being in Initial D, making this bus route of the more exciting rides in the country! It’s also along the way to Kent Ridge Park, Haw Par Villa, and for some a comforting plate of Fong Seng Nasi Lemak.

Try to grab a seat at the front on the top deck for unobstructed views, and pretend you’re on a Big Bus Tour!

For the countryside lovers

Escape from the city on bus 975, which traverses along the Lim Chu Kang heritage road, for a feel of the good ‘ol kampong days. You won’t find any skyscrapers here—instead it's a scenic bus route filled with Angsana, Broad Leaf Mahogany and Rubber trees, army camps and even a few cemeteries.

Places to visit along this route include Singapore’s only goat farm, Hay Dairies, Hai Inn Temple, and even the jetty at the Police Coast Guard for a glimpse of the sea.
