The grind of daily life can be a huge buzzkill. As the days wear on, married couples often forget to thank people closest—each other. There is no single key to a happy marriage but one crucial factor is showing gratitude.
We do not think twice before saying "thank you" during work. In the haven of our own home, we take things for granted. We do not thank people we are most grateful for. We become immune to what makes them special and, instead, dwell on their shortcomings. That is the downfall of many marriages. Scientists at Georgia University found that gratitude gives a clue about how happy a marriage is. In addition, all couples inevitably quarrel. Words of encouragement and appreciation can then soften the blows of conflict. A little gratitude goes a long way for a happy marriage.
“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” –William Arthur Ward.
Saying is one thing. Showing is another. Far from showering expensive gifts, it is about being big on the little things in life: the power of touch. Simple physical encouragement like handholding or a pat on
the back work wonders. It is going take time, though. Showing appreciation time and again makes your partner feel needed and proves your commitment in the long run.
In any relationship, there will be times when you can hardly find anything to be thankful for at all. When the going gets tough and you feel like giving up, remember why you started in the first place. That is enough to remind you everything is worth it.
You are what you think. Be thankful and make your partner a happy thought.
