The concept of farm-to-table has gained traction here where families become more conscious about the foods they eat and keen about doing their part to choose sustainable food options.

To get started, plan a visit to local farms here and learn more about sustainable urban farming. Some farms allow public to volunteer and host educational tours suitable for young children from ages 5 years.

As a family, these trips allow you to learn more about the source of our food and gain an appreciation for how nature provides for our nourishment. Most farms sell a home kit where you can start your own farm at home or buy fresh produce direct from the farms which also supply to local restaurants and businesses here.

Green Circle Eco-Farm

Founders of the Geen Circle Eco-Farm started the organic farm in late 1999 as a continuation of their affinity to nature and conservation activities. The farm practices permaculture and thus shares with nature. For some, it may appear that litter is all over the farm but these efforts encourage reusing everyday items and natural resources. For example, plants are watered using rain water captured by a roof and gutter system that directs to a holding pond.

The farm conducts educational talks and tours around the farm to explain and share more about organic farming. Hands-on activities can be arranged. Email for queries about tours.

Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)

GUI is a non-profit community that is building Kampung Kampus, a low-carbon footprint community campus on a land plot in Yishun, Singapore. Aside from promoting urban sustainability and nurturing eco-conscious community, GUI runs programmes and workshops that cultivates values such as the spirit of innovation, resilience and grounded leadership.

Check out their calendar for harvest season where you get to help harvest, prepare the land for the next planting and enjoy a meal made with the harvest-of-the-day! Each session is typically about 4 hours and suitable for kids ages 5 and above.

Volunteering with GUI can take place on the land helping to farm, cook and housekeep the area to build up and maintain the space. Or you could choose to get handy and crafty by upcycling materials and help with dismantling wooden pallets and upgrading workshop space.
