Hobbies are not just ways to spend time; it is also a way to create memories with your grandchild. Nothing brings people closer than sharing a passion. Sharing your hobbies can foster a deeper relationship with your grandchild. It provides opportunities for some one-on- one time.
Here are some handy tips:
- Try your grandchild’s favourite game
- Indulge in your pastime together
- Teach your grandchild a skill
- Relive your childhood activities
- Exchange stories about your most memorable hobby moment
Picasso once said that "Everything you can imagine is real". This cannot be truer for Mr Alex Tan, 63, a semi-retired hawker.
During his free time, you can find him on board a fishing boat off the shore of Singapore. For safety reasons, he does not bring his six-year- old grandson, Sebastian, along. Instead, they spend an hour every week to ‘fish’ from the couch. Alex shares his wisdom about the wind and current while Sebastian listens on, all bug-eyed, clutching his toy rod. It may be only child’s play but there is nothing ‘pretend’ about their quality time.
Grandparents play an important role in family life. With increasingly hectic lifestyles, you hardly have time for your family. Sharing your hobby gives you a wonderful occasion to spend time with one another. By becoming a part of each other's lives, both generations will create lasting memories together.
And this is a great hobby to share.
