Congratulations on finding your soulmate. The next step is to spend the rest of your lives together. Feeling nervous is normal; putting on that ring is the start of your ever after. Here is a 'bucket list' to ditch those jitters before taking the plunge.
1. Speak Up about Children...
To have or not to have. That is the question. When? How many? Whose religion should the child follow? Marriage is more than just-the-two-of-us. Raising a family becomes a key focus after marriage, making it a must to discuss before tying the knot.
2. ...but Listen to Opinions about Finances.
Money does not make the world go round. But it sure can make or break any relationship. Discuss financial matters before getting married. Money is the number one thing married couples fight about. Purchases, household budgeting, credit card liabilities; the list goes on. Do not assume these will fall together after marriage. The truth? Before they do, things will start falling apart. Have a serious chat with your spouse-to be so you both are on the same page on how much to save, how much to spend, and how much to invest.
3. Make a 5-year Plan
You are going to spend the rest of your lives together. It makes sense to make plans first. What do you see in 5 years? What is your lifelong dream? Set goals and work towards them together as a team.
4. Travel with BFF(s).
Sure, you can still do so after marriage. But let us face it; it just won’t be like the “old times”. In fact, make this trip your bachelor/bachelorette party; it will give you and your Best Friends Forever (BFF) a good laugh in the years to come.
By now you will notice there is zilch on wedding planning. That will keep you busy enough, so don’t forget to look after yourself and invest time in building the relationship with your future spouse. After all, your other half is the best thing that has ever happened to you.
