Families For Life | Don't ban your kids from social media - try this instead
The Big Question
Should kids be given access to Social Media? This is a question that pops up in several debates and discussions. That being said, should they be given access to social media or not? The keyword here is balance. As active users of social media, we are wary of its dangers. Although social media has its downsides, there is no denying the positives it brings to the table.
The Impacts Of Social Media
Over the last decade, social media has changed the way humans interact. Social media users come into contact with diverse groups of people from different walks of life with different upbringings and cultures. This exposure directly or indirectly impacts people's characteristics and mannerisms. At times, social media gives individuals access to niche communities that they previously would never have had access to. This is especially helpful for kids who are struggling to find groups where they feel they belong or fit in.
The Inevitable Reality And The Importance Of Digital Literacy
Despite the obvious risks associated with social media, it is extremely important to not overlook the value of it and how relevant it is to society in this current day and age. Banning it from your kids only temporarily sets them back till the inevitable happens. At some point, they will eventually catch on and get onto social media themselves. If this is inevitable, what should you do? Inform your kids and advise your kids on what to do and not to do on social media. How to distinguish between reliable and unreliable information sources, personal information that they should not share carelessly and so on. This enhances your kids’ digital literacy. An essential skill in today’s world. This helps them navigate around social media better and know what to do when they come across things they should not be seeing online.
Understanding Algorithms And Finding Balance
Social media platforms and applications make use of various algorithms to show and recommend to your kids content that they are more likely to prefer. So confide yourselves in the fact that your kids are seeing the things that they themselves fancy. As stated right above the keyword is balance. Ensure your kids are not constantly glued to their phones and social media feeds. Encourage them to partake in real physical interactions and activities. Limit their usage of social media by setting boundaries like no phones during dinner and so on. Instead of imposing a ban, enhanced digital literacy and social media consumption in moderation is what you should be working towards.
