Physical activity starts from birth. Even before your baby can crawl or walk, moving, stretching and exploring help build the strength and coordination needed for future milestones.

For young babies, the best activity is simple floor play in a safe environment. Giving your baby supervised tummy time each day helps strengthen their neck, shoulder and back muscles. As they grow, time on the floor also encourages rolling, reaching, sitting and crawling.

You do not need expensive toys. Everyday items such as colourful containers, soft rattles, textured fabrics and safe household objects can spark curiosity. Place a toy slightly out of reach to motivate your baby to stretch and move towards it.

Songs, nursery rhymes and simple games like peekaboo can also encourage movement. Your baby may clap, kick, reach out or turn towards sounds and familiar voices. These playful interactions support both physical and brain development.

When your baby is exploring, always check that the area is safe and free from hazards. Close supervision allows your child to move about confidently while staying safe.

The goal at this age is not structured exercise. Instead, provide plenty of opportunities for free movement and exploration throughout the day.
