Tucked between the towns of Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang in the Western region of Singapore is the surprisingly bustling town of Bukit Panjang.

Home to over 120,000 HDB residents living in some 35,000 flats, Bukit Panjang has a good spread of nature and modern amenities. Right at the heart of the town is Bukit Panjang MRT which links to the regional LRT with easy access to neighbourhoods such as Senja, Fajar and Pending.

Every Bukit Panjang resident will be familiar with the triumvirate of Hillion mall, Bukit Panjang Plaza and Junction 10. Located in close proximity with each other, the three popular malls boast retail outlets, foodcourts and eateries, enrichment centres and other essential services, and are anchored by a large supermarket each.

You can find the futuristic, well-stocked Bukit Panjang community library – split into separate Adult and Children’s sections – at the top floor of Bukit Panjang Plaza. And just across the road is the Senja-Cashew Community Club, a fully integrated CC and sports complex that comes with a swimming pool, children’s water playground, sports hall and dance studios, perfect for those who love an active lifestyle. The CC is located right at the water’s edge of Pang Sua Pond, a Bukit Panjang landmark and a beautifully landscaped water body with floating wetlands and picturesque 480-metre boardwalk.

Attention to providing amenities for a spectrum of residents living there can be seen in the newer developments in Bukit Panjang. The Bukit Panjang Polyclinic and Senja Care Home is the first co-located Polyclinic and Nursing Home in Singapore. Not only is there easy access to medical facilities for seniors, the development is designed to promote communal integration, so that older folks will always feel like part of the community even as they recuperate there.

Another much welcomed amenity at Bukit Panjang is the newly opened Senja Hawker Centre. With 28 stalls in the food centre – including four which are Michelin-rated, busy families are spoilt for choice when it comes to affordable food options.

Nature at their doorstep

Bukit Panjang residents have easy access to nature reserves and neighbourhood parks via park connectors and cycling paths. Located right next to HDB blocks is Zhenghua Nature Park, a popular spot for off-road cycling enthusiasts and nature lovers. The scenic Hindhede Quarry and the lush green Rail Corridor are also located nearby – ideal for leisurely weekend nature explorations for families with seniors and little ones.

Support for the Family by Fei Yue Bukit Panjang

Depending on your stage in life, there are various programmes available to you. Couples can sign up for marriage preparation (PREP) or marriage enrichment courses designed to give you new insights to yourself and your relationship.

Parents, too, are well-supported. The Purposeful Play programme helps parents develop their child through play and home activities, while those with older school-going kids can consider taking up the Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme) course which teaches simple and practical parenting skills. All these programmes are evidence-based, fully-subsidised and designed to meet local parents’ needs.
