Interest in the local arts and culture scene has been growing over the years. More Singaporeans are now visiting the museums and galleries. Arts performances and cultural events have also seen a jump in attendance.

If you are looking to scratch that creative itch, here’re some ideas to light that artistic spark in your family's life.

Viva la Visual Arts

Want to sketch or paint like a pro? You’ll find lots of online art lessons available on Youtube or learning platforms like Skillshare. There are step-by-step tutorials designed to bring you from the first brushstroke all the way to a finished work. Turn this into an opportunity to create a piece of collaborative artwork as a family and display the completed piece at home!

Keen to find out about our visual arts scene or learn about our local artists? Head for art clusters like the National Gallery Singapore, Singapore Art Museum and Gillman Barracks. There’re also Arts events happening throughout the year, like the Singapore Biennale or the more community-oriented People’s Association Passion Arts Festival.

Mad about Music

Most of us enjoy listening to music of different genres even if we do not play an instrument. But if you’re itching to get hands-on, our local community clubs run a great variety of classes and workshops to help you get started. For a fun family project, how about signing up for drumming classes or learn how to sing acapella?

If classical music is your thing, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) holds free concerts at outdoor venues like the Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay. Pack a family picnic and bring your loved ones down to enjoy a little night music!

Passionate over Performing Arts

Thrilled by performing arts genres like theatre or dance? The Esplanade works with our local artistes and theatre groups to come up with fresh, new content designed to inspire children and youths. The Esplanade website is a great resource chock full of original content for kids looking for things to watch, read and do—from an introduction to the arts for young audiences to holiday crafts.

The Esplanade also runs free Family Weekend activities and performances for the public at their premises.

Lit on Literary Arts

If there are avid readers in your family raring to write, our libraries have a treasure trove of free online and offline programmes and workshops running throughout the year. From memoir writing for seniors to the art of storytelling, there’s always a line-up of literary gems waiting to be discovered.

Serious budding writers should look out for the Singapore Writers’ Festival (SWF). The event features readings, talks and workshops by a star-studded line-up of local authors and overseas guest writers across different languages. This year’s SWF returns from 5 to 14 November 2021.
